Have Recent College Graduates Experienced Worsening Wage and Job Distributions?

چکیده
This article examines whether recent college graduates have fared as well as their predecessors. We examine changes in both the wage and occupational distributions. Specifically, we explore the claim that college educated workers are increasingly likely to be in “non-college” occupations. The latter are defined using standard economic concepts rather than the subjective groupings of occupations used in previous studies. We show that changes in the wage distribution and changes in the proportion of college-educated workers in “non-college” jobs reflect continued improvements through the mid-1980s, but a deterioration in the late 1980s and early 1990s. 1 Gottschalk is Professor of Economics and Hansen is a graduate student at Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA 02167. eginning with the important work of Murphy and Welch (1992), a great deal of recent research has attempted to document and explain the dramatic changes in the wage distribution that occurred during the 1980s (see also Katz and Murphy 1992). Practically every income group faced a decline in real wages during the 1980s. However, workers at the 33rd percentile experienced a 14 percent drop in the ...

This paper extends the method of local instrumental variables developed by Heckman and Vytlacil (1999, 2001, 2005) to the estimation of not only means, but also distributions of potential outcomes. The newly developed method is illustrated by applying it to changes in college enrollment and wage inequality using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth of 1979. Increases in college e...

متن کاملUnderstanding the City Size Wage Gap.
In this paper, we decompose city size wage premia into various components. We base these decompositions on an estimated on-the-job search model that incorporates latent ability, search frictions, firm-worker match quality, human capital accumulation and endogenous migration between large, medium and small cities. Counterfactual simulations of the model indicate that variation in returns to expe...
